In 1809, Daniel Grinnan, an early 19th-century merchant and land developer, bought a section of Allan Town from the estate of Charles Yates, who had died earlier that year. One particular, which had been Yates’ house, was constructed in the path of Charles Street, stopping the street from continuing on toward Charlotte Street.
